flowing locks and sparkly frocks: the 86th academy awards

i’m shawna and i’m an award-show junkie. i love it all -the pre-show countdowns, the gown predictions, even the awkward time fillers e! online employs as they anxiously await the stars’ red carpet arrivals. and yesterday’s academy award broadcast was no different than the years to precede it. i made sure to plant my bum on my couch precisely at 2:30 p.m. to ensure that i didn’t miss a minute of ryan seacrest’s interviewing prowess and for nearly the next six hours, i was in hollywood heaven. lupita, charlize, amy, jessica, brad and angie, oh my! and perhaps aside from liza minnelli’s cobalt hair or travolta’s serious name butchering, i thought this year’s tribute to the films and performances of 2013 was one of the best i’ve seen in a good long while. ellen should probably just host most things.

anyway, not that you haven’t seen five zillion “best dressed” lists already since last night’s broadcast, but here are my two (fashion) cents about last night’s looks:

(in no particular order)

jennifer garner looked lovely and 1920’s inspired in her oscar de la renta gown (styled by rachel zoe, i die). i loved her soft waves and side-swept bangs.

kate hudson in versace. this photo speaks for itself. kate won the red carpet, everyone else can go home.

lupita nyong’o in (custom) prada. she called the color “nairobi blue” in her interview with seacrest, an homage to her kenyan home. with her simple headband and understated jewelry, she looked every bit the part of hollywood a-list actress. which she has now become on the heels of her well-deserved win for her supporting role in 12 years a slave. and that speech. well done, lupes.

to me, naomi watts was the epitome of old hollywood glamour. i loved the soft-swept waves and the cap sleeve details on her calvin klein gown.

guiliana rancic wore an australian (yay!) designer, paolo sebastian, and looked like a beautiful ice princess. i loved the detailed bodice and flowy tulle skirt. if i thought i could get it over my calf, i would drive to her house right now and steal it from her closet.

emma watson may or may not be my top girl crush at the moment. i love that she’s not afraid to take fashion risks (like wearing pants under a dress) and homegirl can rock a statement lip like nobody’s business. she played it safe(r) in this gunmetal vera wang number, but despite her demure color palette, she still looked fresh and flawless.

the mommas-to-be –olivia wilde, kerry washington and elsa pataky shut it down, plain and simple. all seven of them (elsa is preggo with twins) looked stunning in valentino, wu, and saab, respectively.

olivia wilde proved that you can never go wrong with classic black and (a hint of) white. when asked who she was wearing, she playfully replied “we are wearing valentino,” obviously referencing the tiny human she’s currently growing. pretty and witty? some girls just have it all.

from the neck up, you’d never know elsa pataky was pregnant. with TWINS for that matter. with her basketball-sized babies bump, she looked stunning in her twinkly teal elie saab gown. and she accessorized the whole look with some arm candy in the form of her gorgeous husband chris hemsworth.

kerry washington proved yet again that she can do no wrong in the fashion realm. she paired her deep lavender jason wu gown with a plum lip and reminded us all why she took home people magazine’s coveted title of “best dressed woman of 2013.”

and finally, jared leto went with the whole white jacket trend (a la seacrest and mcconaughey) and donned this saint laurent number.

i have never been more jealous of a man’s perfectly tousled beach wave-ombred hair AND his ability to give the most perfect oscar acceptance speech of all time.

let’s be honest, we’ve all had a crush on jordan catalano at some point over the years, but now knowing the depths of his adoration for his momma? i’m sorry, seth, but it looks like you’ve got yourself some serious competition.

until next year!
