little black sweater dress

there are some items that are essential for any fashionista’s closet -a simple white tee, a perfect-fitting pair of jeans, a great pair of heels, and of course -the top garment of them all –the quintessential little black dress (LBD for the acronym-affectionate).

over the years, i’ve owned many an LBD. as my tastes (and body) have changed, so have the silhouettes. after a recent closet purge (what is it about a closet purge that makes me so happy? maybe the fact that it makes room for new, fun pieces), i realized i was in desperate need of a new style. so when i attended a local madewell event last weekend, i had my eyes peeled for a classic contender.

then i spotted this simple sweater dress with a button-back detail. i had glossed right over it online, but was pleasantly surprised by its modest length (i’m always on the lookout for a midi-length dress that’s work and play appropriate) and comfortable fabric. just goes to show you that you can’t always judge a garment by its online profile. once i got the dress into the dressing room and was able to try it on, i fell even more in love with its shape. it hugged in all the right places but without being too clingy. it’s made from extrafine merino wool which makes it perfect for staying warm and yet it’s not at all itchy. the unicorn of fall/winter LBDs if you ask me.

given its forgiving silhouette, i decided to take it for its inaugural wear on thanksgiving. though the sun was out, the air was still pretty cool, so i decided to throw on a pair of tights under my cowboy boots for an extra layer of warmth. finally, i accented the distressed leather of the boots and my bag with my natalie borton camille necklace in a rich cognac color. though this look is pretty understated, it also felt really chic and classy. the great thing about this dress is that it’s essentially a blank canvas. i can’t wait to remix it with a chambray button-down tied around my waist for a casual look, or paired with a pair of ankle-strap pumps for the perfect office appropriate ensemble.
