the pants that almost weren’t

let me tell you a fun story about these pants. they were the pants that almost weren’t.

as soon as i spotted them amongst madewell’s newest crop of arrivals, i decided i needed to make them mine so i ordered them in a small and anxiously awaited their arrival. unfortunately when i finally had a chance to try them on, i found they they were a bit too big. so i decided to place a second order for them in an xs and returned the smalls to the store the next day. when the second pair of pants arrived last week, though they were the correct size, they were a different pair of pants entirely. i quickly jumped onto madewell.com and much to my dismay, the pants were now sold out in my size.

so i got to work. i called madewell’s 800 number and to my surprise was connected immediately to a real live human (shout out to melanie). i explained to her my dilemma and she quickly got to work. after being put on a brief hold she had managed to track down a pair of xs that had just been returned to their san francisco store. she then proceeded to transfer me directly to the store where i was able to purchase them over the phone. they even threw in free overnight shipping for my trouble. talk about customer service, y’all. if i wasn’t already a madewell shopper for life, this experience sure did solidify my loyalty.

anyway, now that i’ve told you about how i got the pants, let’s talk about the pants themselves. they’re perfect for a gal like me who makes her wardrobe work double duty for both her professional and personal life. paired with a simple tee and some flats they’re perfect for a lazy weekend look (they have an elastic waistband, talk about comfort!) but they can also be elevated effortlessly with a silk blouse and a pair of wedge sandals. they’re light-weight making them essential for warm weather but honestly i can see them paired with a sweater and booties even as we transition back to fall. plus they’re in my favorite silhouette of the year -wide leg and cropped. now do you see why i went to the lengths i did to make them mine?

i wore this cute little ensemble to a quick mall run (god bless my husband) and then to dinner at urge, a gastropub with a few locations across the city. i played up the greyish tone of the stripes by sticking to a mainly black and white color palette but i can’t wait to add cognac into the mix the next go around. we each had a beer and feasted on crispy brussels sprouts, fish & chips and a salmon burger. it was the perfect evening in the perfect pants with my perfect guy.
