berets for fall

2 Permalink 0

i recently took inventory of my hat collection and donated a couple styles that no longer suited me. after years of trial and error, i have found that wide-brimmed styles balance out my ample dome, baseball caps should only be purchased from the men’s department, and i can wear a beanie, as long as it’s the slouchy kind.

hats seem to be one of those accessories that can cause feelings of self-consciousness, at least initially. but of the years, i’ve come to learn that –as is the case with most things in terms of personal style –as long as you feel good about yourself in [insert garment of choice here], that confidence will exude.

which leads me to the topic of this post: the hat of the season, the humble beret. after seeing them heavily featured in j.crew’s fall catalog, i became intrigued to try the traditionally french hat style for myself. worried that i’d look like i was playing dress up (like i was going as a painter or a mime for halloween), i pushed past my hesitations and tried one on during a shopping trip to anthropologie. and you know what? i liked it! i liken it to wearing a chicer version of a beanie (which means i like to wear mine on the slouchier side). and much like a pair of statement earrings, or a bold lip, it instantly gives a little flair to any outfit, not to mention the fact that it satisfies my perpetual wish to dress like a french girl.

if you want to jump on the beret trend for fall, i’ve rounded up a few of my favorite (and affordable!) options:

Your post is très bien. I had to check out the hats on the Anthropologie site. They have a great selection. Mom made berets for the three girls when we were young. Loved them then… love them now. You look great in the classic!

Homemade berets? How fun! They are such an underrated hat style, I’m excited to wear mine all season long. xoxo
