it’s friday, i’m in love || 6/6/14

guess what? it’s friday again and that means, another installment of “it’s friday, i’m in love.” my apologies for not posting last week, hopefully after shawnuary concludes, we’ll be back to a regular posting schedule. in the meantime, happy friday and enjoy!

one || i have been on the hunt for the perfect pair of white jeans since dory and the gang tried finding nemo. i’ve searched high and low, ventured through the sea of swirly twirly gum drops and even passed through the lincoln tunnel (name that movie, go!) in the name of alabaster denim. enter madewell’s boyjean in pure white. and cue angels singing…they are the perfect combination of comfort and flattery. most white jeans have this crazy “i might as well be painted on your body” fit that is not only unflattering but a little damaging to the old ego, too. so finding these looser-fitting pair that still manages to give your backside a nice shape is like stumbling upon the holy grail. i wore these babies with this top to mother’s day dinner with my nude-colored seychelles heels and felt like a million bucks. i think any pair of jeans that makes you feel like a million bucks is worth splurging for, ammiright?

two || huffington post featured an article last month with the “17 top selling items at trader joe’s.” while i was fairly surprised at the product that earned top honors (really? triple ginger snaps?), i whole-heartedly agree with most of the remaining items on the list. particularly #2, #3 & #7.

three || i read the following quote from anne lamott on one of my favorite blogs last week and i cannot get it out of my head.

What if you wake up some day, and you’re 65, or 75, and you never got your memoir or novel written; or you didn’t go swimming in warm pools and oceans all those years because your thighs were jiggly and you had a nice big comfortable tummy; or you were just so strung out on perfectionism and people-pleasing that you forgot to have a big juicy creative life, of imagination and radical silliness and staring off into space like when you were a kid? It’s going to break your heart. Don’t let this happen.

because we all (especially yours truly) could all use a reminder to worry less and live more.

four || if you’ve been watching the boob tube lately, you are well aware of the fact that the fault in our stars trailer has been circulating for a few weeks now. after i read john green’s novel last fall, absolutely loved it, and balled my eyes out on account of it, too, i was met with bittersweet emotion when i learned that they were in the works of turning it into a movie. the sweet emotions were spurred on by the fact that it’s a beautiful unexpected love story and casting shailene woodley as hazel grace was the perfect move. the bitter parts were due to the realization that i’m obviously going to have to see it and that means crying alone in a movie theater for upwards of an hour an a half. which, i’m not above doing, of course, i’ll just have to be sure to bring my own box of kleenex this time. the movie opens nationwide today.

five || speaking of opening soon, the del mar san diego county fair opens tomorrow. this year’s theme is “the fab fair” in honor of everyone’s favorite lads from liverpool -john, paul, george and ringo, collectively known as the beatles. in addition to the usual fried fare, rickety rides, and creepy carnies, the annual tradition has some new features for their 2014 season -including two photographic exhibits of never-before-seen (in california) images of the beatles from their first visit to the states back in 1964, an exhibit commemorating the 50th anniversary of the JFK assassination called “the JFK experience,” and of course, some really ridiculous artery-clogging culinary creations. this year’s diabetes-inducing grub includes (but is not limited to) a triple decker krispy kreme cheeseburger  (three patties, two pieces of cheese sandwiched between two krispy kreme donuts), deep fried chicken skins, more bacon-wrapped items, and a chocolate peanut butter pretzel, which let’s be honest, actually sounds delicious. while i try to avoid the fair at all costs (mostly on account of the traffic and the interesting humans that the fair tends to attract), there are a few good acts lined up for this year’s toyota summer concert series -third eye blind on june 7th, darius rucker on june 13th and hunter hayes on june 14th. so maybe i’ll cozy up to some carnies after all…

six || step aside, acai, there’s a new superfruit in town: pitaya. i recently mentioned my love for the colorful fruit, but in case you were unfamiliar with its health benefits, i’m here to enlighten you. also referred to as a “dragon fruit,” this product of the cactus plant is not only is it high in vitamin c, full of antioxidants, and low in sugar (lower than the acai berry, in fact), it also turns into the most gorgeous shade of fuchsia when blended all up to make the base of a pitaya bowl. while i could never fully give up my beloved acai bowls from honey’s, i think i may have found a new alternative to my typical weekend power breakfast. want to recreate a pitaya bowl at home? these recipes look simple and delicious.

    You’re correct – those jeans are very nice; probably designed by a woman! And it’s fun you’re trying new fruit. The pitaya is very healthy and cacti aren’t doused with pesticides so its fruit is free from that nasty stuff. Enjoy your weekend.
