fall fashion 2015 || my latest wardrobe additions

madewell fall fashion

with new york fashion week kicking off tomorrow and on the heels of some pretty spectacular labor day weekend sales, i’m feeling quite ready to embrace fall fashion once again (though i’m never not ready for boots, scarves, sweaters, and tights). if only the weather would cooperate…

so to prepare for the best season of the year (IMHO), i treated myself to a few goodies to get my closet autumn-ready. here’s what’s on its way to me in 3-7 business days:

fall picks 2015

one || plaid flannel button-down. if there is one pattern that is synonymous with the latter half of the year it would certainly be plaid. once september hits, i’m mad for plaid until at least january of the following year. it’s just so versatile! i can throw it on with a pair of high-rise skinnies and d’orsay flats for a cute casual look on the weekend or pair it with a black flared skirt, tights, heels, and a statement necklace for an ensemble suitable for the office. i found this red buffalo checked version at gap of all places and though i purchased it in a flannel fabric for a little more warmth in the cooler months (i tend to run cold all the time), it also comes in a lighter-weight cotton.

two || cozy neutral sweater. i’ve talked ad nauseum about my hunt for the perfect replacement ivory knit sweater i lost to shrinkgate last spring. despite all my harping, i have yet to find a version that i love as much as that one.  much like plaid, a good neutral sweater can take you from fall into winter and back into spring again. worn alone, layered over your favorite chambray, or under a quilted vest (see below) or jacket, it’s the kind of must-have piece you need to create a clean, classic, timeless look -day or night. i love the ribbed detailing of this long-sleeve sweater from j.crew factory in a merino wool blend. though it comes in five vibrant colors, i of course opted for “snow.” fingers crossed it’s the one to at long last fill the ivory sweater-shaped hole in my cold-weather closet.

three || quilted puffer vest. i’m a southern california girl through and through, i complain if it’s too hot and most definitely if it’s too cold. so while you might assume that a puffer vest was better suited for someone living on the opposite coast, i’m here to tell you au contraire. if it dips below 70, it’s totally grounds for layering.

every year j.crew (or in this case j.crew factory) comes out with a new version of their quilted puffer vest. and every year i pass it up thinking, nah, i’ll probably never wear it. then come october, i start to see every fashion blogger and their mother pairing it with boots and button-downs and all of a sudden, i have major non-buyer’s remorse. so when the iconic piece went on sale last weekend in honor of labor day -all the way down to 50% off – i thought maybe that was universe’s way of telling me to finally make one mine. so i did. while i was tempted by the buffalo plaid pattern, i opted for the classic “marine salt” hue instead. i can already envision it layered atop my festive navy and white gingham button-down with my favorite dark skinny jeans and trusty leather boots.

four || leopard d’orsay flat.  for someone who hated the idea of pointed-toed flats for years, i’m certainly making up for lost time. i’ve found the d’orsay flat and i don’t think my feet will ever be the same. since i already own these particular flats in black and tan, it totally made since to get them in leopard print as well (obviously). a wise woman once said that “…leopard is a neutral” (her name was jenna lyons and she’s the coolest), and i like to heed that advice when putting together my outfits. so when i’m not wearing boots this season, chances are, my piggies will be positively purrrfect under these leopard flats. my favorite outfit to compliment these flats? a simple black sweater, black high-waisted skinny jeans, gold necklace, and a classic red lip. tres chic.

stay tuned for future daily outfit posts featuring my new duds! hopefully it’ll start to feel like fall around these parts very soon. if not, i’ll just have to take the photos inside… standing directly in front of my window air conditioning unit.

I’m with you on the vest. (I want to make one for youngest g’daughter and embroider her name on it. Yes, it will happen!) The ivory sweater is a must-have. The shoes are just your style. The plaid shirt will keep you cozy… and they just get more comfy with time. Great additions to your closet. Enjoy.
