accessories have been used to describe characters for years –the girl with the pearl earring, the man with the yellow hat (curious george, anyone?), the girl with the dragon tattoo

well here’s another one to add to the list:

the girl in the black hat.

if you’ve been reading for a while, you know i’m never one to shy away from a good chapeau. i basically lived under either my fedora or panama hat this summer and i plan on living under my knit grey beanie this winter if the weather would ever dip below 80-degrees (enough already!). hats not only add a little pizzazz to an outfit, but more importantly, they prolong the need to wash and style my hair, which, as you may imagine takes about 24967240967230967 hours. just kidding, it takes about one hour but when you shower at night, it can really cut into your project runway watching schedule. so yes, basically i’d wear a hat all the time if it wasn’t deemed “unprofessional” at the club.

anyway, since i seem to have my warm-weather hat collection satisfied for now, i decided to focus on finding another felt hat to carry me into the fall and holiday season. on a whim, i dragged S to the forum with me last friday night and as we were leaving h&m, i spotted the perfect black hat, the only one of its kind and in my size. though i was wearing a tennis outfit at the time (we had just come from playing our weekly match), i modeled it in the mirror and knew at under $50, it had to be mine.

so there you have it. the story of how the girl in the black hat came to be. though elusive, i suspect this isn’t the last you’ve seen of her.

outfit details:

black and white striped tee | j.crew (old, similar option)
black felt hat | h&m
lip color | baremineral’s marvelous moxie lipstick in “risk it all”
