as i’ve mentioned earlier this week, san diego doesn’t get a traditional “fall” as other parts of the country (or even other parts of the state for that matter), so the shelf life of some of our summer staples is a little longer. take this lace dress for example, you may remember it from this post. sadly i didn’t have many opportunities to sport it this summer so when i was assessing my closet the other morning, dreaming up future outfits as one does when they’re procrastinating on getting ready for their day, i thought about how i might remix this summer dress for fall. and with the addition of a few pieces from my existing wardrobe, the transformation was easy!

given the fact that this dress is fairly feminine, i wanted to counterbalance it with a more masculine touch. the denim vest added a little edge while the leather booties and felt fedora were the perfect nods to the fall season. vests are a perfect way to add visual interest to an outfit without adding too much bulk (or heat). if it’s chillier where you are, simply swap the denim vest for its jacket equivalent.

this second look is probably my favorite of the two. i picked up this striped coatigan from loft last year (previously featured here) and i was excited to remix it in a new way. i’ll admit that i was hesitant to pair such a heavy knit with an ethereal-looking frock, but i was pleasantly surprised at how cute they looked all put together. i especially loved how the lace peeked below the hem of the sweater ever so slightly, almost making it appear like a trim. the beanie was a last minute touch to add both warmth and comfort.

the longer i live in san diego, the more i realize that there really isn’t a differentiation between my spring/summer and fall/winter wardrobes. everything kind of gets thrown into the pool to be mix and matched throughout the year, so sometimes it takes extra creativity to make old pieces feel new again. i loved challenging myself to dream up new ways to wear this dress, especially since it’s not one i normally gravitate toward when i’m picking out what to wear everyday.
