new holiday traditions

with the holiday season upon us, i have been thinking a lot about the traditions S and i want to start as a new little family of two. and one of those traditions is getting a REAL christmas tree every year -even if it’s just a little one to put in the corner of our home. growing up, my family always used fake trees (which i totally respected given the fact that pine needles are the worst) but as i’ve gotten older, i’ve realized that there’s something about the smell of fresh pine that just can’t be beat.

so S and i ventured to home depot this weekend to snag the perfect charlie brown tree. well a charlie brown tree on steroids, actually. at just over 1300 square feet, our condo isn’t tiny, but it’s not exactly sprawling either. so we opted for a tree of modest height that could be tucked away in a corner but still enjoyed from most areas of the house.

going into the search, i had asked S which type of tree he preferred -a bushy douglas fir, or a sparser noble. interestingly enough, S opted for the former whereas i’m a fan of the latter. we compromised with a tree that fell somewhere in between. look at us, already applying the principles of marriage to something as trivial as christmas tree shopping.

given the fact that i wear skirts and dresses almost exclusively to work, i’m usually super casual come the weekend (i.e. jeans). but after snagging this black dress and realizing how comfortable and cozy it is, i’ve been inspired to branch out of my usual weekend uniform. i remixed the sweater dress with tights and my hunter boots (since i knew we’d be traipsing around the christmas tree lot) and threw on a chambray button-down tied at my waist to give a little definition as well as to break up the monotone. i added a beanie for both warmth and to hide my dirty hair (always).

since christmas tree decorations can get expensive (and annoying to store), we decided to keep things simple by stringing strands of white lights around the branches and finishing off with hand-tied burlap bows (which i made myself!). my inspiration was joanna gaines (naturally) and with the neutral color palette, i think we managed to achieve it.

You look great… warm and comfy. I love your tree… the simple lights and the burlap bows shout homey Christmas. Your tree will welcome you home with a sweet smell and happy lights. Make sure you purchase Christmas Eve pjs!

Thank you! We’re pretty obsessed with it, too. I wish we could keep it up all year long. xo
