the $5 tee

you know that feeling when you realize your entire wardrobe has become just a sea of puff and ruffle-sleeves? no? just me?

well recently i had the epiphany that, ah! i don’t own any basic tees. i have my beloved ribbed tanks which i wear to death in the summer, but can you believe (gasp!) my wardrobe didn’t contain perhaps the most fundamental piece of all? a classic white t-shirt?!

let’s make it clear, i’m not really a basics kind of gal. my uniform is a feminine top + denim + ballet flat and i’ll live and die by that formula for the foreseeable future. however, after dabbling in outerwear this season (specifically this jacket), i realized that a puff-sleeve isn’t exactly the best thing to layer under a jacket (without it feeling like stuffing a sleeping bag back into its travel bag). SO i figured i’d grab a couple simple tees to have in my arsenal to layer under jackets for a simple, yet classic look.

target a new day short sleeve slim fit casual t-shirt (small) || zara wide-leg jeans (cropped, sized up!) || very similar flats

in discussing my fashion plight with a dear friend she immediately suggested the a new day line at target. “with how quickly white tees get ruined from stains (aka tiny children wiping their hands on you), it’s not worth it to get anything more expensive.” she had a point. and i have FOUR hands wiping things on me!

enter the $5 tee, ladies and gentlemen. the no-fuss, no-frills, straight forward humble workhorse of every barganista’s closet. with over 1200 reviews, it fit the bill for what i needed.

it’s light-weight but not so sheer that it’s inappropriate. a simple nude bra will ensure you don’t have a wardrobe faux pas during school drop-off or pick-up. i’d say it fits true to size but if you’re looking for a more oversized fit, i’d size up at least one size. i grabbed it in white since it’s the most classic wardrobe basic, but i purchased it in black as well for a second option. it also comes in a handful of other colors if neutrals aren’t your thing.

i get a small commission for purchases or clicks made through links in this post. thank you for supporting the brands that keep this blog up and running.
