Homemade-Taco-Seasoning

okay, i know it’s really “taco tuesday” but today is thursday and i’m talking about tacos so it seemed appropriate to take slight artistic license…

anyway, fun fact: S and i really like tacos. or just mexican food in general (who doesn’t though?). accordingly, we have turkey tacos at least once a week. S usually fills corn tortilla shells with the seasoned meat and i add a couple generous scoops to a mountain of romaine salad (with avocado, dressing, and whatever else is leftover in the fridge -kalamata olives, roasted red peppers, garbanzo beans, etc.). it’s a relatively quick and easy dinner to whip up after a long day that always seems to hit the spot.

on our last visit to costco, S and i picked up a four-pack of ground turkey to keep in the freezer and thaw when needed. considering the frequency of our turkey taco cravings, it really has been a great investment. of course, turkey is only so good on its own. what really transforms it from flavorless to festive (ole!) is the seasoning. so i figured i’d share our favorite taco seasoning that we should probably just make a huge batch of and keep in my cupboard…

homemade taco seasoning (adapted from rachel cooks)

ingredients:
1 tbs. chili powder
1/4 tsp. garlic powder
1/4 tsp. onion powder
1/4 tsp. crushed red pepper flakes
1/4 tsp. dried oregano
1/4 tsp. paprika
1 1/2 tsp. ground cumin
1/2-1 tsp. sea salt (to taste)
1 tsp. black pepper

directions:
in a small bowl, mix all ingredients and store in an airtight container. or you can mix it together in the container you are going to store it in -just give it a shake!

add 2 to 3 tablespoons of this mixture plus 1/2 to 3/4 cup of water to one pound of cooked meat (in our case, ground turkey). simmer over medium heat, stirring frequently until there is very little liquid left in the pan.

serve with your favorite taco toppings!

muy delicioso.
