what we’re buying for our new home

inspired by this post, i thought i’d share some of the items we’re purchasing for #casaderivera. we didn’t want to buy too many things before moving in since it wouldn’t make sense to lug more stuff from one house to the other, but we have snagged a few things to start the furnishing process. below are the pieces we’ve purchased along with a few of the items we’re planning on ordering once we’re more settled in our new abode. oh and the above photo is a sneak peek inside our NEW formal dining room (with the previous owners’ furniture). can we talk about all of that natural light and those french doors? we plan on swapping out the chandelier (possibly for this one), snagging similar chairs, and having S build us a proper dining room table. oh and we’ll probably need an area rug, too…

ikea hemnes 8-drawer dresser || i realize that ikea furniture is usually reserved for your college years and early 20’s, but you can’t beat a well-made dresser for less than $300. this one has EIGHT drawers (which is three more than our current dresser) and comes in a clean white design with black accents. our bedroom is mostly white (as is the rest of the house) so i’m leaning into that with regards to the decor. i plan on accessorizing it with lots of gold frames (love these), a tray, perhaps some candles (these are our favorite) and some sort of greenery (either eucalyptus branches or a succulent).

ikea hemes nightstand || in all honesty, nightstands are really just places to put your phone while it sits on the charger overnight. am i wrong?! accordingly, we wanted something that was super simple with minimal storage so these fit the bill perfectly. it’s amazing how quickly junk accumulates when you have space to house it, so S and i have made a pact to limit the number of drawered pieces of furniture we buy so as to avoid excess clutter. we’ll see how long it lasts 😉 i at least plan on getting a decorative basket for one of the shelves. the other might hold a stack of books. despite the fact that i’m always way too tired to read before bedtime.

target safavieh corbin rug || i file area rugs under the same category as decorative pillows –things that are unreasonably expensive for what they are. thankfully target has a vast catalog of options at affordable prices (we’re also red card members which helps us save an additional 5% every time). my friend natalie has this rug in two different colors in her home and it’s beautiful (and well-made!). we ordered the ivory/grey combo (though the grey reads more taupe) and plan on placing it in the living room under our sectional. since the bottom floor is all hardwood, we’ll be looking for more rugs to scatter throughout, so if you have any suggestions, please pass them my way! i plan on looking on wayfair, home depot, and checking home goods regularly, too.

interior define sloan u-sectional || fun fact: S and i have never sat on the same couch for the entire length of our marriage. when we moved in together, we opted to buy a small sofa and oversized chair and ottoman to furnish our living room in the condo. unfortunately neither of them fits both of us comfortably, so come tv-watching time, we resort to our respective areas and snuggle up solo. one of the things i’m most looking forward to in terms of the new house is the ability to finally be able to fit a large sectional in our living room so S and i can sit together while watching vanderpump rules. after many strong recommendations, we’ve settled on ordering a custom sectional from interior define, an online company that allows you to customize your couch from a variety of colors, sizes, and styles. we’re 99% sure we’ve settled on the sloan style u-sectional in the natural color fabric with natural wood legs. it’s probably tempting fate to get such a light-colored couch, but maybe this will force us to eat our dinners at the kitchen table for a change?

birch lane pendant lights || speaking of kitchen, it’s probably one of my favorite rooms of the entire house. coming from a space slightly larger than a shoe box (S and i can’t both be in the current kitchen at the same time without bumping into each other), our new kitchen feels like the taj mahal. besides having all of the cabinet and counter space we could ever want/need, we also have a beautiful island in the middle of it all. after S spotted this photo on instagram, we fell in love with the idea of adding pendant lighting over the island to add a bit of character. we plan on hanging two side by side.

west elm classic cafe dining chairs || in keeping with the kitchen theme, we’re excited to have the space in the area between the kitchen and the living room to make a small nook for breakfast and dinner dining. right now we’re eyeing a small round pedestal table (something like this) and pairing it with these chairs. i anticipate many quiet mornings sipping coffee and admiring our backyard.

world market wide neck clear glass vase || while furniture helps, what really makes a house a home are the little details. besides filling the house with lots of personal photography (can’t wait to print more wedding photos!), we plan on expanding upon our indoor plant collection and adding in playful accents like these clear glass vases. i envision them in the bathrooms and atop side tables with either olive or eucalyptus branches in them. very joanna gaines-esque, if you know what i mean.

and those are just the items we’ve agreed upon for now, obviously we have a lot more to buy in order to fill the 2200+ square feet! but as i mentioned in this post, rome nor casa de rivera was built in a day.

do these home posts interest you? i know i’m always interested to see how others decorate their home (love these home tours on cup of jo) so i figured it might be fun to include you all on the furnishing process. i’ll be sharing a bit more of the inspiration behind our vision soon.

Aww, thanks so much, girl! I plan on sharing so much more from our experience, including how we like our sectional (we just need to place the order now that we have the measurements down). I just added a “Casa de Rivera” tab at the top so all of the posts are bundled together. Thanks for following along!

      xoxo
