after a very spendy april, may has been a welcomed quieter month in terms of closet additions. perhaps that’s because june is birthday month so maybe i’m just tempering my spending habits now in order to treat myself for the next 30 days? that’s not not true. ANYWAY, some of the items i suspect to be homeruns are on back-order until late june so this is mostly just a review of my misses (and a few wins!). but as i’ve said before, my misses could in fact be your homeruns, so i always want to provide details and links to any items i try for that reason!
the homeruns
zara wide leg jeans (27 –sized up one size, ordered in blue) || funny story. i’ve ordered and returned these jeans before. but then i saw them on my friend, natalie recently and decided i wanted to give them a second chance. the reason for the change of heart? she cropped them. i swear they look like completely different jeans! they do run quite small so i recommend sizing up one size for some wiggle room. while i would love to trust myself enough to crop them myself, i will be taking them to my trusty tailor to do the job, leaving a raw hem to keep them modern. they’re a thicker denim that feel like a vintage levi’s so i’m so happy to welcome them into my jean family.
agolde parker long denim shorts* (25 –sized down one size) || doth your eyes deceive you, these are the same shorts that i declared were “misses” in the category below. HOWEVER they are in a blue denim wash instead of black denim. despite not loving the darker color, i did love the fit of the parker long shorts so i decided to reorder them in the different wash. i wear my beloved agolde distressed jeans constantly so i have a feeling these will become closet mainstays as well. they have an 11″ rise and a 4.5″ inseam making them the perfect measurements for this modest mom. they do run on the larger side, so i suggest sizing down one size for a proper fit. with this new pair, i will officially retire my madewell momjean shorts and set my sights on possibly snagging the white parker style as well.
*after further consideration, i ended up returning these. just wanted to be transparent!
target joylab high-rise cross front bike shorts 7″ (small) || on any given day pre-naptime, you can find me in a pair of leggings, running shoes, and an oversized sweatshirt. it’s my official “haven’t showered yet mom at the park” uniform. and while we’ve been having a bit of may grey lately, i know those warm temperatures are right around the corner. that means mama needs some shorts to get her through an early morning playdate come july. enter these bike shorts. they came highly recommended by one of my best friends -one whom always seems to land the best #targetdoesitagain finds. and i can tell you, she didn’t let me down. they’re a great fabric, the kind that doesn’t ride up with movement and the criss-cross waistband makes them feel a bit playful. i opted for black for its versatility, but they come in three additional colors if you want add a fun shade to your workout wardrobe. i find they run TTS.
j.crew wide-leg denim trouser in pearl wash (25- sized down one size) || before i ordered the zara wide-leg jeans, i decided to try this trouser pair from j.crew. i don’t usually turn to j.crew for denim but i loved the look of this style (seemingly a bit more sophisticated) and after determining the aforementioned zara jeans suited me better as a cropped pair, i decided that if i liked the j.crew style, i’d keep them as full-length, giving me at least one pair of denim that reaches the floor, lol. guys, these jeans are GOOD. like way exceeded my expectations level good. after reading the reviews, i decided to size down and i’m glad i did, they fit perfectly. they have a tad bit of stretch, too, making them extremely comfortable. i will say, upon ordering, i was notified that the jeans wouldn’t arrive until the end of july yet somehow they managed to make it to my doorstep about a week after ordering them? so if you do plan on trying a pair, you may enjoy them long before the projected ship date.
the misses
agolde high-rise denim shorts (25 –sized down one size, ordered in black) || after falling in love with agolde jeans last fall, i’ve been on a journey to dabble in their short silhouettes for summer. these came very highly recommended from a stylist so i was very hopeful they’d be worth the lofty price tag. and objectively, they are really good. this particular pair is the parker loose-fit vintage style with a slightly longer inseam. they do run generously so i sized down to a 25 and found they fit well -a little loose in the waist, but not so much so that i’d size down an additional size. as we barrel toward tripe-digit temperatures come august, i’ve been wanting to add one more pair of shorts to my wardrobe. i thought a pair of black denim would be versatile enough and add a bit of edge to my otherwise very feminine closet. however despite how much i loved the fit of these particular shorts, i didn’t fawn over the wash. so i did the responsible thing and sent them back (given how much i spent on them!) and decided to order these instead. i think adding a classy trouser-style short might be a fun addition that can be dressed up or down and transition nicely into the fall.
pockets cotton shorts || (small –ordered in black) || and the trouser-style short has entered the chat, lol. after being hopeful that these shorts would be a summer wardrobe staple, i was very disappointed to learn of their simply strange fabric. though their description says “cotton,” they felt more like a light vinyl, almost more appropriate for an umbrella? it seemed like a peculiar choice for an otherwise “dressy” style of shorts. while the fit and length were great, i couldn’t justify keeping them based on the funny fabric. so the search for a proper pair of black shorts will march on…
zara z1975 buttoned wide leg jeans (26/2) || in my search for the perfect wide-leg denim, i tried this buttoned pair first before landing on the aforementioned winners. unfortunately when they arrived, the placement of the pleats and buttons made them all sorts of unflattering. however i will say, while not every pair has been a homerun, the quality of zara denim continues to impress me, especially for its price point!
oversized linen shirt (small –ordered in sand) || we recently had our first pool day of the season and it made me realize i don’t really have a proper bikini cover-up in my closet. so while perusing zara jeans, i researched linen shirts and voila, up popped this oversized linen top. when it dropped on my doorstep, i tried it on over my favorite gingham bikini and immediately felt like an imposter. my sister pointed out that the pockets read a tad bit indiana jones and i think that was the confirmation i needed that it just wasn’t right for me. i will say it’s a good fit overall, perfectly oversized and a soft linen fabric. i found the small to be the proper size for me.
madewell classic straight jean in lunar wash (25 –sized down one size) || after ditching all of my black denim, i figured it might be a good time to restock my supply. madewell must have heard my cries because they then proceeded to put everything on promo for 25% off for the memorial day weekend and bam, these straight jeans ended up in my cart. they have over 200 five star reviews so i was very excited to see what the fuss was all about. unfortunately the straight leg cut felt a bit more boot cut, at least on my body. things i did like were the wash, the overall fit (through the waist and hips), and the ankle-length. but the flared leg just isn’t the vibe i’m going for at this current juncture (again, not sure this is how they’d fit on everyone) so i’m going to return them and keep looking. this style does boast some stretch so i would suggest dropping down a size as madewell denim tends to run generous.
and what has yet to arrive
anthropologie puff-sleeved blouse (small -ordered in white & black) || another month, another puff-sleeve top. topssssss. yes, i insisted on purchasing it in both white and black because i have a problem. the funny thing is it’s on backorder until the END OF JUNE. so i suppose these will be late birthday presents? early 4th of july gifts? anyway, i’ll keep you posted but i haven’t met a puff-sleeve top i haven’t loved yet.
j.crew ruffled featherweight satin scoopneck top (xs) || i ordered this for no other reason that both kids were sick and it was 50% off. sometimes you just have to treat yourself. i will say it caught my eye months ago but i never followed through. but then i was perusing j.crew’s new arrivals and noticed it had gone on sale for half off its original price. that was all the sign i needed (well, that and the whole twins being sick thing) to move forward. while it is described as “satin,” it also says its machine washable so that sounds like a mom-friendly top to me. i plan on wearing it with my freshly cropped zara jeans and woven mules.
