do you remember? the purchases made in september? please tell me you’re singing that in your head to the tune of the earth, wind, and fire song…
i do. and unfortunately, most of them were womp, womp.
but what didn’t work for my closet put money back into our bank account so that’s always a net gain, right? anyway, i have a feeling that the next couple of months might include a few extra purchases with holiday collections on the horizon so perhaps a curtailing of spending is just what the doctor ordered. at any rate, here are this month’s purchases.
the homeruns
citizens of humanity horseshoe jeans (24 –ordered in bravo wash) || the sole homerun this month was a style of jeans of which i now own EVERY SINGLE WASH. i couldn’t just not add the dark denim version to my collection so here we are. i can’t wait to pair them with a pair of red flats when they come back in stock next month. as always, size down!
the misses
schutz arissa metallic leather flat (9.5 –ordered in gold) || if you haven’t noticed, the ballet flat is the IT girl of the season. for someone who has loved ballet flats for many years, i’m just happy to see everyone finally get their balletcore fix. when your favorite style shoe becomes trendy, your options are suddenly multiplied. it seems that everyone everywhere is peddling their version of the feminine shoe silhouette. i decided to try out a new-to-me brand, schutz, for a gold style to add to my wardrobe. at under $100, their version of the metallic flat seemed almost too good to be true (most of my pairs cost double that amount). when they arrived, there were many elements i liked about schutz’s arissa stlye –it’s a malleable leather that offers comfort, the bow detail was sweet, and the gold was perfectly not too yellow. however, the fit was off. they ran 1/2 size too big and there was little to no arch support (it felt like walking straight on the ground). in my late 30’s, comfort is KEY so despite the pretty design, i couldn’t justify keeping them.
farm rio patch denim midi dress (xs) || you guys know i love a statement piece. but this dress doesn’t just make a statement, it makes an entire monologue. as soon as i lifted the box, i knew its contents were high quality by its weight alone. the denim felt substantial and the quality matched its lofty price point. but in the words of my darling husband, it felt like the designers said, “why don’t we take ALL the ideas and put them onto the dress?” there was just so much going on -ruffles and buttons and suspenders and stitching, oh my! i will say, it fit perfectly but other than that, its overabundance of details was simply too much. it was a good try but thank goodness for return policies.
mango bomber-style cardigan with pockets (small) || now that it’s officially fall, i am never not thinking about adding to my sweater/outerwear collection. as a native san diegan, i am admittedly warm-clothes averse, but the truth is, i get really cold when the temperatures drop below 65-degrees. SO i’ve beeirn on the hunt for a few more bomber style or lady jackets for the fall/winter seasons. i had seen one of the stylists i follow in instagram post about this pocket cardigan and decided to take a chance and order it. chocolate brown is big for fall and i liked the idea of adding a bit of my feminine flair with a giant flower pin. while i loved the weight of the knit itself (perfect for a temperate climate like southern california) and the gold buttons, the overall fit was a tad too oversized for my liking. i would definitely suggest sizing down for less bulk. as with anything, it has to be a LOVE to stay in my closet so because i felt less than enthused about this cardigan, back she went.
and what has yet to arrive
margaux the demi flat (40 wide –ordered in cerulean napa) || after the flats i ordered in august were all flops, you’d think i would take a break from purchasing shoes. but i’m no quitter, so i took the advice of one of my style crushes, tara moni, and ordered these denim-looking flats from margaux. unfortunately they won’t shop for another 10-12 weeks but fingers crossed they’ll be worth the wait. they come in a rainbow of colors.
free people we the free lucky you mid-rise barrel jeans (25 –ordered in ultra light beam) || i realize my horseshoe jeans obsession has gotten a leeeeeetle out of control (okay maybe a LOT of out of control), but i wanted to try the more affordable free people version out of a) curiosity and b) to offer a viable dupe to anyone wanting to try the style without the hefty price tag. my girlfriend saw one of our style crushes in these jeans recently and said they looked SO good on her (she was wearing them with a short sleeve navy cashmere sweater, hello chic!) so that was the only push i needed to order them for myself. as you recall, i did try the faux leather version last month only to return them, but i’m excited to see how the denim style fares. the reviews are mixed on sizing so i stayed with my true size just in case they don’t run as generous as my citizens style. stay tuned!
i get a small commission for purchases or clicks made through links in this post. thank you for supporting the brands that keep this blog up and running.
