since the weather today is finally starting to feel a little like fall, i thought it quite apropos to discuss my affections for autumnal dressing -in particular my love affair with all things plaid. my madness for plaidness, if you will. i love it for blouses and trousers and skirts and most definitely on members of the opposite sex (hint, hint). i currently own two plaid shirts (both by j.crew, obvi) that you’re bound to start seeing a heck of a lot more of now that we’re entering into the “-ber” months. but like sequins and horizontal stripes, one can never really own enough plaid. so if you’re like me, you’ll be looking to add a few more patterned pieces to your fall/winter wardrobes. that goes for you, too gentlemen. so i’ve gathered a few of my favorites from around the interwebs.
loving these button-downs in every color and price range:
campfire plaid shirt | forever 21
plaid shirt (comes in three patterns) | old navy
plaid camp shirt (comes in two colors) | gap
factory classic button-down shirt in flannel (comes in four colors) | j.crew factory
if a plaid pant is more your speed, there are plenty of patterned trousers to choose from this season. any of these options would be a very welcomed addition to my closet:
[i know these aren’t pants but they’re too adorable not to share. with tights and a crisp white button-down? i die.]hive & honey cozy plaid shorts | piperlime
marisa plaid ankle pants | ann taylor loft
checked trousers with zips | zara
tartan cigarette trousers | topshop
while these pants are cute and all (and also great in cold weather), anyone who knows me knows that i’m more partial to skirts. a few of these may come dangerously closet to resembling kilts and/or private school girls’ uniforms, but i have scottish heritage AND i went to private school, so we’re good:
st. margaret plaid maxi skirt | shopruche
factory pencil skirt in black watch plaid | j.crew factory
asos check pencil skirt with bead embellishment | asos
free people lady macbeth skirt | free people
now once you’ve expanded your plaid collection, you might be looking for a little ensemble inspiration (i know i always am). you’re in luck, there are many ladies in the fashion blogosphere that wear plaid and wear it well this time of year. here are a few of my favorite ways to incorporate the pattern into your daily wardrobe:
blair of atlantic-pacific shows us how plaid and tutus as well as plaid and sequins are matches made in heaven (planning on recreating the tutu combo stat):
liz of sequins & stripes looks adorable in the marisa plaid trousers by loft:
caitlin of style within reach looks casually chic by pairing her plaid button-down with a military vest, denim skinnies, and ankle booties:
and my girl kendi of kendi everyday showcases her plaid by pairing it with some bling and a colored cord:
so while you may think plaid is only for burly men who chop wood and live in log cabins or for the man skirts they sport in scotland, i’m here to tell you that it’s for you, too. so go forth and plaid!
p.s. i also wrote about plaid fashions last year during my stint as a fashion contributor for Miss A. check out more inspiration here.
