after growing up in the golden era of the britney spears message tee, i swore off anything text-adorned (except of course my tried and true abercrombie & fitch sweats, natch) for quite some time. but leave it to madewell and j.crew to rope me back into the early 2000’s trend. with kitschy little sayings like “bien fait” (made well) and “bisou bisou” (kiss kiss) printed across their signature tees, i found myself warming up to the idea of being a walking billboard again. and then madewell launched their sezane partnership this past summer and i immediately fell in love with a parisian print tee — “paris mon amour”; translated “paris my love.” not only is paris a city near and dear to my heart, the red and white stripes had me seeing all the heart-eyed emojis. i was so glad i acted fast because of course in a matter of weeks, the tee was sold out.
much like a statement scarf or a sparkly shoe, a message tee is a garment + an accessory all in one. the text adds a little extra interest to an outfit -more than just a basic tee would do. that’s why it’s so versatile in any working closet, you can dress it down for day and up for play! though this tee is no longer available, i’ve linked some adorable alternatives below (LOVING the “bonjour winter” long-sleeve tee from anthropologie).
