so in case you didn’t already know, christmas eve is TOMORROW. gulp. fortunately after a productive weekend, the pile of once unwrapped gifts residing on my desk is now safely contained beneath some festive wrapping paper and bows. just in time for santa.
so in case you’re looking for a last-minute gem to sneak under the tree, i thought i’d share my favorite gift to give not just this time of year, but for birthdays, celebrations, and maybe for no reason at all. let’s be honest, i can always find a viable reason to extend a little something to someone special the other 364 days of the year.
my favorite gift to give is shauna niequist’s book bittersweet.
truthfully, any of niequists’ three books would make wonderful gifts -notably bread & wine for the foodies in your life. but i think i gravitate toward her sophomore novel for the fact that i truly believe there is a chapter in there for everyone, no matter their age or season in life. as the title suggests, sometimes life is bitter, sometimes it’s sweet. we experience both -occasionally at the exact same time. but no matter what, both aspects are integral parts of the journey. shauna says it best when she writes, “when life is sweet, say thank you, and celebrate. and when life is bitter, say thank you, and grow.”
anyway, i’ve found that it’s one of those gifts that keeps on giving, with each of my own re-reads through its pages, i always come out on the other side a little more comforted, encouraged, inspired, and simply, loved.
