say what you will about nph’s hosting duties or about the fact the show itself ran over a good thirty minutes, but like nearly every other year to precede it, i enjoyed hollywood’s biggest night. there were quote-worthy acceptance speeches, amazing musical performances (looking at you, gaga) a few awkward moments, sure, (please stop touching idina menzel, mr. travolta) but thankfully the abundance of great red carpet fashion made up for it. and while the rain may have put a slight damper on things (literally), it certainly didn’t stop my picks for best dressed from shining bright like diamonds.

here are my top five looks of last night:

joanna newsom in ermenegildo zegna

joanna newsom

she may not be one of hollywood’s a-listers in her own right (married to funnyman andy samberg), but homegirl proved she can hang with the big girls in her delicate wedding gown-esque gown with colored accessories.

naomi watts in armani prive

this look was edgy but not too edgy. and i especially loved the inset sequin boddess with cutouts and berry lip.

emma stone in elie saab haute couture

emma stone

y’all already know that emma stone can do no wrong in my book. but i’m especially in love with how well the chartreuse hue of her haute couture gown complimented her hair and skin tones.

reese witherspoon in tom ford

reese witherspoon

when you’re reese witherspoon, you really do look adorable in everything. but she looked like the quintessential movie star in her black and white tom ford dress.

and finally, because a turquoise statement necklace will get you everywhere (and by “everywhere” i mean on this list),

cate blanchet in maison margiela and with tiffany & co. jewels

cate blanchett

people seem to think this look was boring, but i disagree. when your eyes match your statement necklace, i’d say that is anything but snoozeville.

as far as the gents go, the navy suit with black lapel is certainly having the best year ever.

and on that note, it’s time to close the chapter on yet another awards season. thank you, hollywood for bringing your A-game yet again this year. enjoy the time off. and eat a cheeseburger.
