despite the fact that we’re in the middle of what i can remember being one of our hottest summers yet, we’re just days away from many retailers’ official launch of their fall 2014 collections. i mean, except for nordy’s who is already featuring some pre-fall goodies at their annual anniversary sale.
considering the fact that fall is my favorite season in general and more importantly, my favorite season, sartorially speaking (but you already knew that), i’m like a giddy kid on christmas eve patiently awaiting the return of plaid patterns, cozy knits, and a cooler color palette (olive, and mustard, and rust, oh my!). one collection i’m particularly pumped about is madewell’s. naturally. they just posted a handful of looks onto their pinterest board and i’m already swooning over a few of their fall pieces. unlike the ethereal styles of spring and summer, this collection packs a bit more edge. personally, i’m not sure i can pull-off said “edge” but fashion is all about taking risks, right?
consider this me living dangerously.
this look scares the shiitake out of me. but in a good way. this is the kind of “edge” i’m not quite sure i’m cut out for. but i suppose you never know unless you try. despite my propensity to have the most colorful outfit in the room, i am obsessed with the simplicity of this black and white color palette. it’s sexy, edgy, cool, and comfortable all at the same time. if only my head looked that good in beanies.

cocoon side-zip bomber
high-riser cut-edge jeans

i love me a good denim on denim ensemble (but really, who doesn’t?). this one is no different. with the addition of a felt hat and two-toned quilted jacket, this outfit has the perfect punch of personality needed to make a classic look extra unique. i’d probably swap the booties for a pair of glittery flats because that’s more my speed, but i don’t deny the fact that the shoes enhance the whole tomboy feel of this look.
featured items:
rivet & thread quilted satin coat
the perfect chambray shirt
alley straight jeans
my favorite thing about this outfit is definitely the emerald green suede pumps. i mean. but in terms of everything from the ankles up, i love the contrast of sporty and feminine. other than jeans, my pants wardrobe (pantsdrobe?) is fairly pathetic. especially in terms of work-appropriate trousers. and that’s because pants and i haven’t always been the closest of allies. but the flowiness of these varick trousers evokes the same effortlessness and femininity of a maxi skirt, making them right up my alley. again, the beanie seems fairly superfluous to me, but i love the idea of mixing the comfort of a worn-in sweatshirt with a fancier bottom. if done correctly, i totally think this look could take me from (work)day to (date)night.

over the years, i have discovered that the colors most people have a tough time wearing -think mustard yellow, aubergine, and in this case, olive –are the ones that always seem to compliment me the most. which is convenient because there are usually plenty left in my size. aside from the color palette, i love the refinement of this otherwise “running errands around town” look. essentially it’s a fancy sweatshirt and jeans, but with the addition of the embroidery of the sleeves and the rich wool scarf in a complimentary shade of green, it becomes so much more. just as perfect for stopping by target for toiletries as it is for a day trip to the mountains to see the changing leaves and drink hot apple cider.

embroidered-sleeve pullover

confession: i have owned and subsequently worn a lot of denim skirts over the years. i remember one specifically from abercrombie & fitch that was a light wash and snapped up the front. i wore that thing out. in fact, i’m fairly certain it was THE go-to piece in my freshman year of college wardrobe. anyway, since it has been approximately a decade since my golden years, i think i might be ready to sport a dirt again (that’s denim + skirt). and i’m liking the sophisticated style of this pencil version from madewell’s fall collection. in the perfect classic wash, it looks adorable styled with a white top and plaid scarf and just the right amount of “cool” with a layered leather jacket and boots.

this is my hands-down favorite look of the entire collection. in fact, if it wasn’t 90 degrees today, this is exactly what i’d like to be wearing right now. i love the pale salmon hue of this cozy sweater and how it perfectly pairs with the plaid button-down tied around the model’s waist. the light-wash denim is a tad bit too distressed for my taste but i am willing to overlook it for the fact that madewell’s boyfriend jeans fit like a dream. and then there are those emerald beauties again. seriously, when the collection arrives on july 28th, i might just run into the store and buy this entire look.
